The brand new film’s creator and movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) worked at gambling establishment and you may dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic software, the brand new cast’s suavely managed body language regarding like and menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can fashionably assertive photographs (together with his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of the category.” [ ten ]

Cobb, just like the a police inspector, together with within the rating . Even though the plot observe a common development, the fresh characterizations is actually new together with shows adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you may topical, preventing the psychological, phoney touch. Unusual digital camera basics come along occasionally in order to intensify desire and momentarily arrest the interest. Solid teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling due to the fact manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, original blogger and user music producer, and helps with making this a softer design.” [ 11 ]

Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable little woman just who brings about the brand new finest in him and you may Ellen Received ‘s the easy and slinky vixen exactly who will get your into jams. Thomas Gomez was fatty just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb does another type of in a position journey due to the fact a weary police inspector whom in the end shuts the case. A lot of drinking and smoking is completed of the all worried.” [ a dozen ]
